AAR Mechanical Designations.

These designations are intended to group cars by general type, and appear to have been introduced in 1910, although it was a number of years before all railways designated their cars in the Official Railway Equipment Register. This list includes all major types, but since a number of revisions remain to be referenced some minor types and changes may not be present.

F - Flat Car   G - Gondola Car   H - Hopper Car   L - Special Car   M - Maintenance of Way   N - Caboose   R - Refrigerator Car   S - Stock Car   T - Tank Car   V - Ventilator Car   X - Box Car
