The history of the RCAF is illuminated by proud Canadians who have served in wartime and in peacetime. To fully appreciate this service is to know as much of its history, its people, and its traditions as possible.
Aircrew and Groundcrew
The term "Aircrew" refers to those members of the team that are directly involved with operational flying requirements. They include pilots, flight engineers, navigators, loadmasters, sensor operators, flight stewards, search and rescue technicians, and in the past, gunners, wireless radio operators, observers, and aircrew specialists.
Some are officers and some are non-commissioned members (NCMs). They are considered by many to be at the "sharp end" of the service, ie., where the "action" is. In war, they are often mentioned in dispatches, and deservingly so, since at times the "action" can be life threatening. All aircrew recognize the importance of flying support personnel, the "Groundcrew", and fully appreciate the contribution these team members make to the operational role.
