At the south end of Grosmont tunnel locomotive servicing and maintenance is carried out in the shop buildings here. This large steel coaling tower and ash pit serves the fleet. British Rail tank engine 6619 rests over the ash pit. The American Baldwin 2-8-0 behind the coal tower, built for the Second World War effort, is stored waiting a possible overhaul.
