Canada Line Construction

North Arm Fraser River bridge construction.

Vancouver British Columbia - This photo was taken from the Vancouver side of the North Arm of the Fraser River looking south towards Richmond. As you can see, the foundation work for the North Arm Bridge is moving ahead. The two foundations under construction are 180 metres apart and will support the tower of the bridge.

The closest tower is called N1 as in North 1 and the other is S1 for South 1. What's interesting about this photos is the rock in the foreground. It's actually an extension of Mitchell Island. The island will grow by about 60 metres so that we can rest N1 on it. We're also going to develop a fish habitat as part of this work.

There's a lot of innovation in this bridge as it has to allow for marine traffic to pass underneath it and yet be low enough to avoid interfering with aircraft traffic from the International Airport. The bridge is called an extradosed bridge and it will be the first of its kind in North America when it is finished.
