A closeup of the third rail and a running rail. While the running rails are standard steel the third rail is aluminum but what doen't show clearly is the steel cap on top of the aluminum rail. It's steel to survive the wear and tear of the contact shoe, aluminum wouldn't withstand the continuous rubbing.
