Tram Move to Britannia Goes Off the Rails
26 October 2006

Steveston British Columbia - The city has abandoned plans to relocate the Steveston tram to Britannia Heritage Shipyard.

Council announced Monday that interurban tram 1220 will stay at its current home, a barn in Steveston Park, until staff find a new location in the fishing village.

City spokesperson Ted Townsend said the decision was made over cost and community concerns that a shipyard was not the right place for a historic rail car.

The cost for the Britannia move came in higher than the $127,500 budgeted. Most of the cost involved building a temporary building.

Townsend confirmed the tram will still be moved out of Steveston Park, as it isn't a part of the park's vision.

"There is park redevelopment happening there with the development of the new water park."

Steveston resident Dave Fairweather, who believed the tram's proposed move to Britannia was misplaced, welcomed the news.

"There's no question that they may have seen the light in some way or another that they're going down the wrong track," he said.

In May, the city announced it agreed to pay $400,000 to the Steveston Interurban Restoration Society to gain ownership of the tram.

The tram is about 80 percent restored.

Last year council rejected the idea of routing the tram in Steveston in a 5-4 vote after some residents didn't want a railcar rumbling through their neighbourhoods.

Some still would like to see it run in Steveston, like Graham Turnbull of the city's heritage commission.

Turnbull said if the city is intent on a static display, the best location would be at the site of the last tram station in Steveston Park.
