Train Jumps Track in Gold Hill But Historic Railroad Stays Open
10 August 2010

Gold Hill Nevada - The short line of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad remained in operation Monday despite a derailment on the line Sunday evening that also temporarily closed a portion of Nevada 342 as crews worked to get the train back on line.

A crane was used Monday to lift the locomotive off the road and back on the tracks.

The highway reopened before 13:00, Monday.

Tom Gray, operator of the V&T Railroad, said that about 18:00, Sunday, thunderstorms had flooded the roadway, and the locomotive jumped the tracks onto the highway.

The train was going about 8 mph up the hill, returning to Virginia City from Carson City.

None of the 12 people on board was injured.

The V&T runs two trips, a 35 minute trip that runs daily from Virginia City to Gold Hill and back, and a long trip that runs one-way or round-trip on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays to Carson City (Eastgate siding).

The short trip continued running on Monday and the long trip was expected to be back in operation on Friday as scheduled.

This was the first time a train has derailed in the year since the historic railway reopened to the public, said Candy Duncan, executive director of the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau.

As crews were working to get the train back on line Monday, she said there didn't appear to be much damage.

"The Virginia & Truckee Railroad Company has an excellent safety record and is operated by an experienced team," Duncan said in the news release.

"Operations are moving forward as scheduled for the weekend."
