The Technology Museum provides this tableau showing typical railroad Maintenance of Way employees, some of their tools, and a handcar which was one of the first means of transportation for them. Manually powered handcars such as this one were replaced by motor cars driven by a small gasoline motor, some even had a cab to shelter the workers while travelling along the right-of-way. Today, handcars and motor cars are long gone, replaced by Hi-rails. A Hi-rail is a conventional truck running on rubber tires with steel railway wheels that may be lowered to guide it along the track. Using highways and back roads these vehicles can reach many points along a railroad then maneuver onto the track at a railroad grade crossing.
