This blue beast, number 101, is a Swedish B class 4-6-0 Ten-Wheeler built at Stockholm for the Stockholm-Västerås-Bergslagens Järnvägar (SWB Railway) in 1944. The class itself is a 1909 design for the Swedish State Railways (SJ). When the SWB was nationalized in 1945 the locomotive was renumbered 1697. Sweden was one of several northern European countries that set up strategic steam reserves so that in the event of a nuclear attack knocking out electrical systems, steam locomotives would be brought out of reserve and used for transport. The B class were ideal for this role so many were preserved. When purchased by for use on the Nene Valley Railway the engine was in good condition and a regular performer until its withdrawal in 2005.
