Southern Pacific 4449

Every fifteen years the Federal Railroad Administration required a boiler recertification for operating steam locomotives. The SP 4449 crew started work in February 2013 and continues on this complex project. In late December 2013 a hole was cut in the bottom of the firepan of the firebox, allowing visitors a rare opportunity to peer into the heart of the engine. The boiler inspection is now complete but work continues on other items to ensure a major overhaul will not be necessary for the next fifteen years.

"At the Heritage Center the locomotives get great exposure. The people who come to see them keep this place alive and breathing. The new Enginehouse will write the next chapter for the locomotives. If we do it right the potential is great." - Pat Tracy - Friends of the 4449 Fireman.

"I've had people tell me stories about riding behind a Southern Pacific Daylight locomotive. The get so excited. It's almost like reliving the experience." - Bart Whalen - ORHC Docent.

Nickel Plate Road 190

Nickel Plate Road 190 is a Morrison-Knudsen PA4 diesel locomotive rebuilt from an ALCO PA in 1975. It is one of only two ALCO PA locomotives remaining in the United States. It was purchased by Doyle McCormack in Mexico and he has spent considerable time, effort, and dollars restoring it to near operable condition. It is lettered for the New York Chicago & St. Louis Railroad Company known as the Nickel Plate Road (NKP).
