The first passing siding is located at Rotenegg (sometimes called a loop in Britain and Europe). This Down train on the left was photographed from the Up train which has stopped on the siding. Notice the pantograph on the down train. It is NOT connected to the catenary. Down trains don't feed power from their motor generators back into the wire. Since they are 1914 technology resistors INSIDE the locomotives dissipate the power generated for braking purposes. This produces excessive heat so locomotive windows and doors are typically left open for cooling. After two trips to the summit a locomotive is given a rest period to cool off.
