Land Slip at Lynton Cliff Railway

Lynton Devon United Kingdom - Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway is likely to be closed until 1 Mar 2013 after a land slip.

A small pile of earth is currently blocking the 900 foot track after a grassy bank above the water powered railway subsided on the night of 21 Dec 2012.

The Lynmouth & Lynton Lift Company said there was no possibility of customers or staff being at risk because the railway was closed and the staff on holiday.

It said the slippage had occurred on private land adjoining the railway.

Specialist consultants have advised that a further section of the embankment needs to be removed as it could be unstable and contractors are already on site to carry out the work.

The company said the railway might not be able to open on time for the 2013 season in mid-February but subject to weather not delaying the work it should be open by 1 Mar 2013.

"The company is very aware of its value to the economy of Lynton and Lynmouth which is why our staff and the contractors are working flat out to repair the damage," said company chairman John Ireland.

"However safety has always been the prime object of the company's activities so the advice of the independent specialists will be followed precisely, and the railway will not operate before our advisors say that it is safe to do so."
