This view shows the controlling mechanisms on the side of a car. In the center, below the driver's left foot, are the two balls of the governor propelled by a chain driven by the motion of the wheels. The speed of the car and governor determines when the shoe brakes are applied to the top of the rail. The foot pedal to the right also controls the pressure to the shoe brake sliding on top of the rails. The left foot pedal releases water from the cars tank. The large green geared wheel and chain are part of the deadman's brake control wheel which lifts the weight and releases the caliper type brakes from the side of the rails. The brass coloured cylinder in the center is an accumulator which supplies water pressure for the brakes.
