Come Aboard as Steam
Era Glory Rekindled by Breakfast for Learning, GO Transit and CPR
Toronto - A special train
hauled by a 1930 steam locomotive
will leave Union Station 12 Jun 2004 in celebration of the GO Transit-Canadian
Pacific Railway partnership to benefit BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING, Canada's only
national, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting child nutrition
programs across the country.
Tickets for the two-hour run to the GO station at Milton will go on sale
Monday through Ticketmaster. Passengers who board at Union Station will have
the chance to see CPR steam locomotive 2816 up close during the stop at
Milton, after which they will return to Union Station aboard the GO coaches.
Formally known as the CPR Empress, locomotive 2816 is a restored vintage
steam locomotive fully capable of keeping up the pace with its modern CPR
contemporaries of the diesel-electric variety. Linked to a familiar
green-and-white GO train, the Empress will raise awareness of child-nutrition
issues in a way few Greater Toronto Area commuters will have experienced before.
"We're pleased to partner again with CPR and BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING for
such a worthwhile cause," says Dr. Gordon Chong, GO Transit Chairman. "It's a
great opportunity to give back to the community." GO Transit is the Province
of Ontario's public transit network of trains and buses for the Greater
Toronto Area and surrounding region.
"Through our partnership with BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING, we enable
communities to come together for a common social cause," says Paul Clark,
CPR's Vice-President of Communications and Public Affairs. "Every year,
thousands of children begin their school day without a nutritious breakfast.
This impairs their ability to learn. Our mission is to ensure that every child
is given the nutritional requirements needed to begin their day properly."
BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING was created in 1992 to address the needs of hungry
children across Canada. It is the only national, non-profit organization
dedicated solely to supporting child nutrition programs across the country.
Since 1992, BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING has served more than 175 million meals
to over 500,000 children, and funds 7,000 programs located in every province
and territory in Canada. All programs are managed at the community level by a
network of over 30,000 volunteers.
"A decade ago, child nutrition was seen primarily as an issue of child
hunger as a result of poverty. Today, we know that the issue is more
complicated but no less alarming. Hunger is part of the equation but so are
poor eating habits and inactive lifestyles independent of socioeconomic
status", says Anne Lindsay, Cookbook Author and Chair of BREAKFAST FOR
LEARNING. "That is why we are so delighted that CPR and GO are working with us
to raise both money and awareness to help ensure that all kids have the
opportunity to attend school well nourished and ready to learn."
The CPR Empress steam locomotive is a driving force behind Community
Connect, CPR's charitable donations program. It is a roving ambassador for the
railway and its community partners. For CPR employees, stakeholders and
customers, the train is a potent symbol of the past and a reminder of the role
Canadian Pacific Railway continues to play in the national and local economies
and of its contribution to communities.
