No One Seriously
Injured as Truck, Train Collide
A commercial bus had to transport
rail passengers after the E&N Dayliner collided with a gravel truck in Ladysmith Wednesday morning.
No one was seriously hurt in the accident in which the passenger train collided with a tractor-trailer
loaded with gravel at a level crossing on Transfer Beach Boulevard at 10:30 a.m. The crossing is equipped
with lights and bells but no gates, said Cpl. Ron MacLellan of Ladysmith RCMP.
It was not clear later Wednesday whether the warning lights and bells had been operating. "That's
what we're still trying to determine", MacLellan said.
Twenty-six people, including the conductor and engineer, were on the
train. All escaped with minor injuries. The driver of the truck was not hurt. No one had to be
taken to hospital, MacLellan said.
The train did not derail but it did sustain substantial damage, he said, and the municipality had to bring in
heavy equipment to clear the gravel spilled from the open trailer.
The police investigation into the accident is continuing.
A spokesman, for VIA Rail, which operates the Dayliner could no be reached.
