Canadian Pacific
Railway Behind in Grain Shipments
Bismark ND -
Canadian Pacific Railway is months behind in delivering grain cars from last year's harvest.
Tony Clark, president the state Public Service Commission, told the Legislature's Interim
Transportation Committee on Thursday that the railroad might not get caught up until October.
Canadian Pacific Railway spokeswoman Laura Baenen said bad weather and avalanches along the line
stalled trains over the winter, putting the railroad behind.
"We're working hard to get caught up," Baenen said.
The railroad also was not prepared for the increase in grain produced last year, Baenen said.
"Our customers greatly exceeded predictions for volume," she said.
Clark said the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad is nearly caught up with last year's harvest.
He said the state will be waiting to see how both rail lines perform with this fall's crop.
"While there's little the state can do to order improvements, the governor's office and I
continue to communicate both with rail officials, federal officials and the Surface Transportation
Board to stress the importance of service to our state," Clark said.
