City, CP Rail Cops Mull Charges

Winnipeg - Winnipeg police and Canadian Pacific Railway police are expected to meet tomorrow to discuss the possibility of charges against the driver of a van that collided with a train earlier this week in the West End. A passenger van carrying 12 people slammed into a CP Rail train's second engine about 2 p.m. Monday at a controlled intersection on Logan Avenue near Weston Street.

Witnesses alleged the driver ignored the crossing's lights and bells in an attempt to beat the train.

All 12 occupants suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The crash is under investigation by Winnipeg and CP police.

"They will be reviewing the information that's been gathered," said CP spokesman Ed Greenberg. "The next steps would also be discussed."

It's too early to tell whether charges will be laid, Greenberg said.
