Train-Track
Death Eyed
Perth - Police are
investigating whether a young Ottawa-area man who died Sunday after suffering massive
head injuries was struck while walking too close to a passing freight train. It's believed the
26-year-old man suffered the severe head injuries after being clipped by a
west-bound CP Rail freight train at about 3:10 a.m. as he walked along the tracks near
Farrel Lake, about 25 km southwest of Perth.
Two friends took the victim to hospital in Perth. He was transferred to the Ottawa Hospital's General
campus where he later died. The victim's name was not released yesterday.
The OPP were called from the Perth Hospital and arrived as the victim was about to be transferred to
Ottawa.
Police would not confirm whether a train was involved, although CP Rail spokesman Michel Spenard said
OPP investigators had contacted the railway about an incident that occurred along tracks in the
Farrel Lake area.
According to Sun sources, the victim had been walking in the rain with at least one friend along the
track.
When the train approached, the two friends split up and moved to opposite sides of the track and lost
sight of each other. Once the train passed, one friend found the other lying along the tracks
suffering from massive head injuries.
Spenard said the train crew had no idea that anyone had been struck and continued to Toronto.
"The train was doing 40 m.p.h. If they thought something had happened they would have
stopped," said Spenard. "There was no indication of an impact."
Spenard said CP was only aware something might have happened later in the day when the OPP contacted
the CP Rail police. They then tracked down the correct train and located the crew to be interviewed
by police.
"We're trying to determine what transpired," said Lanark OPP Const. Neil Fennell.
He said the victim was visiting friends in the Maberly area. An autopsy was being conducted yesterday
but the results were not made available.
