CPR Considering Abandoning Beach-Gimli Line
Winnipeg Beach Manitoba - Canadian Pacific Railway is
considering abandoning the Selkirk-Winnipeg Beach-Gimli line, Winnipeg Beach deputy mayor Daryl Carry said
17 Mar 2009.
"There's very low volume," Carry said during a regular council meeting. "It costs much more to maintain. It's not
profitable."
Carry said it will be at minimum three years before CPR gives up the line. He said CPR is looking to sell, lease, or transfer the line.
"Realistically, it will probably be five or six years. They will have to give us notice," Carry said.
CPR had listed the line for abandonment five years ago. It withdrew that plan after inking a five-year deal with Diageo,
the Gimli distillery that is CPR's biggest customer along the line.
CPR was contacted for comment but did not reply.
