Fire Crews Fight Grass, Bush Blaze
Firefighers deal with a grass fire east of the city
Monday.
Saskatoon Saskatchewan - A fire blazing along
railway tracks east of the city on Haight Road kept firefighters busy Monday afternoon.
Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services received reports of a large fire at about 12:30 p.m. Monday. Battalion Chief Jim Wood says
crews arrived to find a large bush and grass fire running almost two kilometres along the railway tracks. Two engine companies, a
tanker, and three trucks were on the scene.
A nearby farmhouse was threatened by the fire, and crews were stationed to divert and extinguish the flames spreading through the
fields.
There were more than 70 piles of old railway ties along the track, which are very combustible due to being made of heavy timber and
treated with a preservative. As of late Monday afternoon, crews were still battling the fires in the piles.
There were no injuries and no buildings were affected. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
