Torched Caboose to Get Makeover

End of Steel caboose at Edmonton, Alberta.

Edmonton Alberta - The caboose in Edmonton's End of Steel Park on Saskatchewan Drive will get a makeover.

A fire last summer gutted the interior of the train car, and the city boarded it up for the winter.

The caboose will get a new coat of paint, plexiglas windows, and be secured so no one can get inside, City of Edmonton spokeswoman Diane Dunn said Monday.

City crews were to begin work to refurbish the car last week, but rainy weather caused a delay, she said.

"It's mostly been weather-dependent and a bit of exploration as to the kind of paint that should be used on the outside and exactly what we would do with the caboose", Dunn said. "There's no doubt, though, that the caboose will be refurbished", she said. "I don't think anybody supported taking it out of the park completely. It's a community neighbourhood icon, but certainly looking to ensure that it was safe and secure for the neighbourhood was part of our discussion".

The caboose was first installed in the park in the summer of 1994.
