Calgary Businesses Gear Up as Outbreak Could Ground 25% of Workers
Calgary Alberta - Taking care of business and
employees is the goal of most Calgary companies preparing for an expected resurgence of H1N1 this fall, with one company likening the
chore to the flurry of activity leading up to the Y2K computer scare nine years ago.
Calgary-based Canadian Pacific Railway is also making sure employees know as much as possible about the risks.
"Right now, we're doing what the majority of companies are doing, which is just making sure our employees know the basics -
communicating with them about flu and what they should do, advising them when it's good to stay home, and when not, general education
about flu in general, and not necessarily H1N1," said spokeswoman Breanne Feigel.
"We recognize that people get sick all the time and each department has operational plans.
The big focus is on watching absenteeism."
CPR has 3,500 employees in Calgary, but its flu plan encompasses all 16,000 workers in Canada and the United States.
Feigel said the company is waiting for more information about flu vaccinations before deciding whether it will offer them to
employees.
