After the driving of the E&N Last Spike by the Prime Minister at Cliffside Shawnigan Lake developed quickly. A former E&N employee built a sawmill in 1890 and with the influx of tourists taking the train up-island from Victoria there were two hotels built by 1900. Today Shawnigan Lake is a bedroom community for Victoria.
