This is so fascinating it's included here. Only a few years ago this would have been considered science fiction. A pod system at Heathrow airport connects parking lots A and B with Terminal 5. A pod takes about 5 minutes to complete a one-way journey. Powered by a rechargeable battery and running on 4 rubber tires along a dedicated concrete track each pod seats up to 4 individuals and is driverless. A person arriving at a pod station selects their destination at a kiosk, then the pod doors open. Once seated they press the "close door" button then the "start" button. A synthesized voice plus a computer screen provide instructions and information about the pod's progress. The pod backs out of the station then proceeds to its selected destination independently of all other pods reaching a maximum speed of 25 mph (40 kph) on the straight sections. Construction costs were £30 million ($48.3 million) and the ride was free. View this pod video Image .
