Whitehorse Derailment
28 November 1978

Whitehorse Yukon - Two locomotives were derailed at the White Pass yards on Sunday night around 7 o'clock.

One of these was still off the track late yesterday afternoon, and Athol Retallack, spokesman for the company, said she didn't know when normal service will be resumed.

No trains ran yesterday because the disabled engine is on the central line, and is effectively blocking all traffic, according to Retallack.

She said the cause of the accident was probably either a split rail, or an error at one of the switches.

The derailed engine is one of the "101 series".

It has 1,200 horsepower and weighs 210,000 pounds.

Retallack says the only way to get the engine back on the track is with a heave duty crane.

And Hector Lang, a Whitehorse businessman, has the only crane of the required weight.
