Deep in the evergreen forest the train continues downgrade towards Oberwald. Look carefully and you will see two pipes sticking up from the ballast on the left side of the train. Each pipe has a sprinkler head on top. There is a water supply system buried in place to provide water to these pipes along the route here. A half hour or so before each train's arrival the sprinklers are activated to damp down the right-of-way as a precaution against forest fires. Before the train arrived I counted at least three volunteers tramping along the right-of-way to activate these sprinklers.
