A little better than two hours after that 10:15 departure from Realp the train approaches the Furkastrasse grade crossing in Oberwald. This is not your average automatic gate controlled crossing. In tandem with the operating barrier gates there is a retractable rack section across the roadway that is raised after the gates are lowered, then lowered when the gates go up, so that vehicle traffic don't damage the rack or their tires.
